The highlights of Icelandic mountain bike trails and top sights around the country in 7 incredible rides in 8 days.
We’ll use 8 days to circumnavigate Iceland, making stops on the way to ride the best trails in each part of the country.
Day 1 – How do you like the North
We’ll load the car and the trailer and start off from Reykjavik for a drive to Siglufjörður which takes approximately 4 hours.
From Siglufjörður we’ll start an afternoon ride. We’ll ride and trek up from Siglufjörður town and drop down a perfect single track leading us to the town of Dalvík. We’ll set up camp in Dalvík after enjoying a dip in the local, geothermal swimming pool.
Day 2 – Akureyri, the capital of the North
We’ll start off by driving from Dalvík to Akureyri. From Akureyri we’ll head up the Súlur mountain which is a great trail with good view of the Eyjafjörður fjord. We’ll also hit the Kjarnaskógur trail on the way down which is a small forest trail set up by the locals.
We’ll camp out in Akureyri, enjoying a nice meal in town and another dip into the Akureyri swimming pool.
Day 3 – Mývatn / Ásbyrgi
Today we drive to Mývatn area to explore on of the great trails around this geothermal area. The mountains are colourful and trails are good.
After the ride we’ll take a bath in Mývatn Nature Baths (less crowded Blue Lagoon of the north) and set up camp for the night.
Day 4 – Ride in Mývatn area
We’ll start off by a short ride in the Mývatn area before we drive towards Egilsstaðir town in the East of Iceland. The drive will take about 3-4 hours. We’ll set up camp and enjoy the evening in the capital of the East.
Please note that once a year an incredible trail is open up North. The first Saturday in September. The trails runs from Ásbyrgi to Hljóðaklettar through the magnificent Jökulsárgljúfur. This day local riders which love single trails and extreme natural beauty. The tour which departs August 30th will include this ride.
Day 5 – To the East of Iceland
Today we take a short drive from Egilsstaðir to Borgarfjörður Eystri. Borgarfjörður Eystri is a small town by this beautiful fjord away from all hustle and bustle. It’s rare to find such natural beauty in a place which is so close but yet so far. Meaning, that there are not many travellers in and around the town leaving the place to us and a few other adventurers.
We’ll enjoy a short afternoon ride to Brúnavík and Breiðavík before riding back to town to settle in for the night.
Day 6 – Dyrfjöll and Stórurð
What a ride we have on the menu for today. The trail to Stórurð (the field of big rocks) if just awesome. Stóruð and the trail are nested below the magnificent Dyrfjöll mountains. We’ll explore this area to details leaving no good tail untouched while enjoying the natural beauty.
Day 7 – Skaftafell & Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
Today we’ll take a break from riding and use the day to transfer to the south coast and visit some must-see sights. We’ll start off driving from Borgarfjörður eystri to Djúpavík where we’ll enjoy the local fish & chips meal right by this small harbour. From there we’ll move on to visit Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Skaftafell where we’ll set up camp. Before hitting the sack we’ll hike up to Svartifoss waterfall in the national park which is right below the largest glacier of Iceland, Vatnajökull glacier.
Day 8 – The South Coast of Iceland
For our last day on the road we’ll select our favourite trail on the South Coast as well as visiting some highlights on the southcoast: Reynisfjara and the black sands, Skógarfoss waterfall and Seljalandsfoss waterfall. After the ride we’ll head back to Reykjavik where we finish the tour.
