Private Geology – And Caving Tour
Iceland’s volcanic landscapes are mesmerizing, but most visitors to Reykjavik don’t travel further than the Golden Circle. This private half-day tour takes you off the beaten track along Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll venture underground to admire the Leidarendi Lava Cave, marvel at the views over Lake Kleifarvatn, and explore the Seltún geothermal area. A truly unforgettable caving tour.
Seltún is a part of Reykjanes nature reserve. It is an important high temperature geothermal area. Seltún has many mudpots and fumaroles, and minerals deposited from geothermal solutions provide colorful sediments. Good walking paths are around the area and parking.
Seltún is close to Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, situated in the southern part of the peninsula. It is located on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The lake has no visible water coming in or going out as most of its water comes and leaves underground.
Leiðarendi cave is a 900 meter long circular lava tube and is a place like no other. The name of the cave simply means The End of the Road and refers to the remains of a lamb that was found in the cave when it was first discovered, only some 20 years ago. You might need to crawl or hunch to make your way inside the cave but that’s depending on the situation at any given time.
